Fusion Splicers are essential for fusing two fiber optic cables together to form a single long fiber. This action is called a fusion splice and allows two glass fibers to be joined together from each end permanently. With fiber, loss must be minimized otherwise the fiber network will not work properly. Fortunately, fusion splicers can join these two fibers with minimal loss, which allows the optical light signals to pass through each fiber effectively.
Fusion splicers are typically automated and provide a screen display that allows technicians to view the splices and detect if it is good or bad. A bad splice is determined by seeing if there is a flaw identified and what type it is. There are both single fiber fusion splicers and ribbon fusion splicers.
Although fusion splicers are imperative for creating long lengths of cable, they are only able to give an estimate of the splice loss. An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) is fundamental for determining accurate splice loss.
