An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) can detect bends, breaks, or distortions in fiber cables by measuring the cable's length and forming a picture or trace of the cable's condition. These traces are created from the OTDR sending pulses of high-powered laser light down the fiber and analyzing the backscatter (amplitude value of returned signal) of light that returns to the source location. The location of the event is measured by calculating the round-trip time of the light pulse sent down the fiber. Besides providing a picture of the fiber optic cable route, an OTDR can also show the integrity of fibers and passive optical components (connectors, splitters, splices, and multiplexers) along the cable path. All of the analyzed information is stored on the OTDR allowing a technician to look back to see cable degradation over time. These features make the OTDR an optimal tool for troubleshooting fiber optic cables. Most issues that end up gradually damaging the fiber are able to be detected and fixed before an outage occurs. This is essential to keeping customers happy and makes the OTDR a great choice for fiber optic testing.

High-resolution OTDR designed for metro network testing and splitter characterization in PON FTTx applications. Optimized for use during the rollout and troubleshooting of metro/core and FTTx/MDU networks.
The OTDR operates within the 1475 to 1626 nm range, known as the SCL band. Its impressive dynamic range of 25 dB (or 32 dB with a reflector) allows precise measurements. When assessing distances, the uncertainty is ±(0.01 + 1% × distance). Remarkably, the OTDR completes its analysis in a swift 30 seconds or less. For accurate chromatic dispersion (CD) assessment, we need a minimum of 8 test points, with an uncertainty of ±10 ps/nm. Additionally, the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) display handles values up to 35 ps, while PMD measurements span from 0.1 to 20 ps with an uncertainty of ±(0.2 + 5% × PMD). These specifications ensure precise characterization of optical fibers, contributing to efficient and reliable communication networks.
